SAMMEIKA THOMAS PACE LADY BEARS OVER TUSKEGEE

TUSKEGEE, AL – Junior center Sammeika Thomas scored a game-high 15 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Miles College Lady Bears basketball team (4-3; 2-3) to victory 52-51 over the Lady Tigers of Tuskegee University (3-5; 1-3) Monday night at James Center Arena.

Lady Bears went in at half down nine points (27-18), while hitting 33.3 percent of their shots from the floor and 100 percent in three's. The Lady Tigers shot 34.4 percent from the field and 66.7 percent at the foul line. Junior guard Ashlee Barley scored five points for Miles and senior point guard Ashley Orphey and Thomas had four rebounds. Tuskegee's Amelia Dorton and Tequila Martin put up seven each. The Lady Bears out rebounded the Lady Tigers 23-17, but had 15 turnovers to Tuskegee seven.

Junior forward Kamissah Shaw gave Miles the lead on a two point jumper with 18:41 to go, but Tuskegee would go up 4-2 on Martin layup at 16:47. The Lady Tigers jumped out to its largest lead of 10 point (18-8) on Martin's two point jumper with 8:26 left. The Lady Bears pulled to within five with 2:43 left on LaTanya Scott layup.

For the game, Miles scored on 21-of-59 (35.6%) shots from the floor and hit 7-of-12 (58.3%) free throws, while Tuskegee went 20-of-55 (36.4%) from the field and 6-of-11 (54.5%) from the line. The Lady Bears out rebounded the Lady Tigers 42-36.

Thomas two point jumper brought Miles to within two points with 8:32 left, then tied the game at 45-45 on another jumper by Thomas. With 3:18 to go the Lady Bears went up by its largest lead 52-47 on Orphey's three pointer. Nnenna Eze hit a jumper for the Lady Tigers to close the gap at 52-51.

Thomas added three blocks and Barley and Orphey scored seven points each. Senior center Brandy Gillespie and junior forward Jessica Franklin scored six points apice.

Tequila Martin and Nnenna Eze scored 12 points each the lead the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Bears will host the University of West Alabama on Thursday, January 6 at 5:30 at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
