LATE RALLY LIFTS LADY BEARS TO 59-53 WIN OVER CLAFLIN

FAIRFIELD, AL- The Lady Bears of Miles College (10-6; 7-5) win tough SIAC clash with late rally over the Lady Panthers of Claflin University (7-11; 6-9) 59-53, in the Knox-Windham Gymnasium on Miles campus.

The Lady Golden Bears held a double-digit lead at the break 38-28. But the Lady Panthers fought back to tie the score 43-43 with 10:15 left in the game. Claflin took their only lead of the second half 45-43, before Miles regained their composure and went on a 9-0 run for a 53-45 Lady Golden Bear lead. Claflin made a run to cut the Miles lead to just three 56-53 with 38 seconds left in the game. Miles would make three out of four foul shots down the stretch to preserve the win 59-53.

In the first half the Lady Panthers quickly gained their largest lead of the game five points, 10-5 at the 16:00 mark in the game. Both teams would trade baskets before Miles went on a 14-8 run to take their first lead of the after noon, 20-21, at the 7:02 mark. The Lady Bears kept the pressure on scoring the next 11 points, before Natalie Davis made a 3-point shot for a 23-32 Miles advantage with 3:18 left. Miles would build their lead back to 13 points, 25-38 with 40 seconds left. A three pointer by Davis closed out the scoring, as Miles took a 10 point lead into the locker room 28-38.

Sophomore Sammeika Thomas led Miles with 11 points and five rebounds at the break, while Davis scored nine points for Claflin.

The Lady Bears out rebounded the Lady Panthers for the game 41-37

For the game, Thomas led the Lady Bears with a double-double in the scoring with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. She went 6-of-10 from the floor, 8-of-10 at the foul line, two assist and four steals. Junior Charlesia Norman added nine points and junior Kamissah Shaw and senior Ashley Orphey scored eight and seven points.

The Lady Panthers were led by Davis with a game high 17 points, followed by Lasaundra Barron with 14 points.

The Lady Bears next game will be Thursday, February 1 in Memphis, TN as the play the Lady Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College at 5:30 p.m.
