LADY BEARS DEFEAT STILLMAN LADY TIGERS 63-52
FAIRFIELD, AL – The Miles College Lady Bears (7-4; 4-3) defeated the Lady Tigers of Stillman College
(4-7; 3-6) 63-52, Monday at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Miles started the game on a 7-2 run as junior guard
Toccara Charles made a layup with 14:06 remaining in the opening frame.
The lead grew to seven for the Lady Bears as Charles connected on another layup to give Miles a 25-18 lead with 2:31 left till half. The Lady Tigers would fight back to tie the game at 25-25 on two made free throws by Jasmine Hazley with 19 seconds left in the first half.
The teams would take a 25-25 tie into the locker room at the half.
Miles shot 23.3 percent from the floor in the opening period to Stillman 25.0 percent. Charles guided the Lady Bears with 13 points and five rebounds in the first period, while junior forward
Kamissah Shaw added five points. Miles out rebounded the Lady Tigers 24-22 in the opening frame.
Jasmine Hazley paced the Lady Tigers with 15 points and Jamila McKinnis grabbed four rebounds.
In the second half, the Lady Bears build the lead back to 20 points after a made front end of a 1-1 free throw by Shaw as the Lady Bears led 52-32 with 8:08 left in the game. Stillman would cut the Miles lead to nine points 61-52 as Hazley drained a jumper with 1:12 remaining. Nine points is as close as Stillman would get as the Lady Bears gained the victory 63-52.
Miles had two in double figures, including Charles with a team-high 19 points, six boards and junior guard
Charlesia Norman 12 points and sank 9-of-10 free throws in the win. Shaw added nine points and seven rebounds and sophomore center
Sammeika Thomas grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, two blocks and three steals.
The Lady Bears won the battle on the boards 52-47, while shooting 23.0 percent from the floor and hitting 29-38 (76.3 percent) free throws and 42.9 percent from long range
Hazley led the Lady Tigers with 26 points, while shooting 8-of-13 from the field, 4-of-5 from beyond the arch and 6-of-6 at the foul line. Mckinnis added 12 points and a team-high eight boards.
The Lady Bears return to the court at Benedict College in Columbia, SC. on Thursday, January 20 with tipoff set for 6 p.m.
