LADY BEARS WIN LAST SECOND VICTORY OVER TUSKEGEE

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Miles College Lady Bears (6-4; 3-3) won by one point with two seconds remaining, as the last second layup taken by Tuskegee University Lady Tigers (4-6; 2-4) Tequila Martin shank that gave the Lady Tigers a one points lead and a one point win, but it was not to be as the basket was waved off due to a charging file, giving the Lady Bears the 68-67 victory Saturday afternoon at Fair-Park Arena.

The Lady Bears started off strong, taking a 12 point lead on a layup by junior guard Charlesia Norman with 12:11 remaining in the opening period. The Lady Bears went to break down 36-38, after Camissa Jackson for Tuskegee made a layup with 37 seconds left to put the Lady Tigers up by two.

Junior guard Toccara Charles paced the Lady Bears with 11 points in the opening frame on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor and 3-of-5 in three pointers. Sophomore center Sammeika Thomas added five points and four rebounds.

Jennifer Anoka paced the Lady Tigers with 12 points.

After the break, the Lady Tigers continued to increase the lead to as much as six points with 3:39 remaining until Thomas tied the game at 66-66 on a layup with 1:07 remaining. Thomas and Orphey made the back end of one and one free throws giving the Lady Bears a 68-66 lead and win at 68-67.

Orphey led four Lady Bears in double-figure scoring with 14 points, six rebounds and a game-high nine assist, while junior forward Kamissah Shaw grabbed a team-high eight boards and 13 points. Thomas scored 12 points, blocked three shots and had four steals and Charles and Norman added 11 and eight points respectively.

Miles shot 35.9 percent from the floor and 17-of-28 (60.7 percent) from the free throw line. Tuskegee won the battle on the boards, grabbing 46 rebounds to Miles 37.

Jennifer Anoka led Tuskegee with 17 points and Tequila Martin added 16 more. Nnenna Eze had a double-double 10 rebounds and 10 points.

The Lady Bears next game is Monday, January 17 at Knox-Windham Gymnasium with Stillman College Lady Tigers at 5:30 p.m.
