MILES LADY BEARS DEFEATED BY FORT VALLEY STATE IN OVERTIME

FORT VALLEY, GA – The Miles College Lady Bears basketball team place two players in double figures in their 56-63 overtime loss to Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats 56-63 in Fort Valley State Arena.

Miles fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Fort Valley State improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Lady Bears went to halftime down 27-28, while shooting 36.7 percent from the field and 50 percent at the foul line. Fort Valley State hit 37.5 percent of its shots and 50 percent as well from the line.

The Lady Bears tied the game five times in the first half, as the team led only twice before the half, at 14:35 Charlesia Norman had a layup giving Miles the lead by 2 and 1:14 to go Ashley Orphey made the front end of a 1-1 with a 1 point advantage. Fort Valley jumped out to a 9 points lead after Brandi Haynes hit a 3-pointer with 10:26 left to make score 8-17.

Second half, the Lady Wildcats took an 8 point lead with 9:23 on the clock, but Miles fought back for the tie at 45-45 off Brandy Gillespie layup with 6:04 left. Sammeika Thomas layup at the 1:39 mark put Miles ahead 52-51, but Tamara Andrews for the Lady Wildcats hit the front end of a 1-1 for the tie at 52-52, sending the game into overtime.

It was all Fort Valley State in overtime as they jumped out to a 58-52 lead and Miles did not get on the board until Sammeika Thomas scored the front end of a 1-1 (58-53).

Toccara Charles led the Lady Bears in scoring with 13 point and Ashlee Barley chipped in 10. Barley and Charles had 7 and 4 rebounds each, while Sammeika Thomas grabbed a team high 10 boards and scored 9 points. Ashley Orphey scored another 7 points and Brandy Gillespie and Charlesia Norman had 6 points each.

Kendra Evans scored a game high 14 points and Jasmine Birdsong had 18 rebounds and 13 points to lead Fort Valley State.

The next game is Thursday, December 2 at 5:30 in Tuscaloosa, AL as Miles play the Lady Tigers of Stillman College.
