O’NEAL SINGLE SCORES WINNING RUN OVER STILLMAN IN SECOND GAME
Birmingham, AL (March 29, 2013) – Senior shortstop
Kendra O'Neal (Talladega, AL) single in bottom 8th scored the winning run for the Miles College Lady Bears softball team in game two for a 5-4 victory, to go with the 6-0 win in game one over Stillman College on Friday, March 29 at A. H. Parker High School.
Miles improves to 19-12 and 16-0 in the SIAC for best conference, while Stillman drop to 14-12 overall and 13-3 in conference play.
Game one: Miles scored four runs in the second, with senior outfielder
Takieta Roberts (Prattville, AL) doubling in junior first baseman
Brianna Barrentine (Oakman, AL), O'Neal double scored senior third baseman
Katie Haistens (Sylacauga, AL) and senior outfielder
Terri Roberts (Prattville, AL) single scored
Takieta Roberts and O'Neal for a 4-0 lead.
In the fourth,
Terri Roberts singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, then scored on a single by junior catcher
Tina Taylor (Sylacauga, AL). In the six,
Terri Roberts walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error, then scored on Taylor's single for the 6-0 win.
Senior pitcher
Amanda Talley (Pinson, AL) (7-4) picked up her 7th conference victory, with six of those being shutouts. Talley went the distance for the shutout while giving up five hits. Ashley Savage went six innings for the loss, while allowing six runs on seven hits and four errors.
Game two: Stillman scored their first run in the first on a Gabrielle Quarles single to score Michelle Gray. In the bottom half, Miles
Terri Roberts singled, advanced to second on an error and moved to third on a sac bunt by Taylor, then scored on a sac bunt by senior second baseman
Tiffany Roberts (Prattville, AL) for a 1-1 score.
In the second, Stillman would re-take the lead as Ashlee Handley reached base on an error and Januar Page singled in Handley to give Stillman a 2-1 lead.
Both teams went zero and out until the bottom of the six, when Miles senior outfielder
Kayla Cox (Morris, AL) singled, Barrentine doubled moving Cox to third, then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.
In the seventh, Stillman Chelsea Nix singled and moved to second on a sac bunt, then to third on a sac fly. Page singled in Nix giving Stillman a 3-2 advantage. In the bottom half,
Terri Roberts doubled, Taylor single scored Roberts for a third tie at 3-3.
In the 8th, Stillman went up by one on singles by Bailey Braughton, Quarles and Braughton scored from third off an error by the second baseman to go up 4-3. In the bottom, Miles DP junior outfielder
Keyana Chapman (Mumford, AL) singled, advanced to second on an error by the catcher. Barrentine grounded out to third to move Chapman to third, then scored to tie the game at 4-4 on a wild pitch. Haistens and junior outfielder
Stephanie Woods (Jasper, AL) walked, Haistens scored on O'Neal game winning single to center field.
Talley (8-4) won the game with three innings pitched, giving up two runs off two hits and an error. Talley relieved freshman starter
Talana Brown (Chactaw County, AL). Brown went five innings, giving up two runs off four hits and one error.
Kristina Kelley (6-6) got the loss for Stillman with 7.1 innings thrown and five runs, nine hits and two errors.
Miles will host Stillman in another double-hitter on Saturday, March 30 at A. H. Parker High School in Birmingham, AL., with game one scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
