Augustus James is beginning his 19th year as Director of Athletics and his 38th year as a member of the Miles College Department of Athletics.  He has served for the past 27 years as Director of the Miles National Youth Sports Program.   As Athletic Director, James has spearheaded the college’s commitment to intercollegiate athletics, transforming Miles into a contender in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).   Under his astute direction, Miles’ fortunes in all sports have realized a celebrated resurgence.   Golden Bear Athletic teams have become competitive forces to be reckoned with.  James serves as Chairman of the SIAC Athletic Director’s Association, is a member of the SIAC Basketball Expansion and Tournament Committees, as well as the Co-Chair of the SIAC Baseball Tournament Committee.  He serves on the South Region Football Committee and is a past member of the NCAA South Region Basketball Committee.

During his tenure at the college, James has developed the NYSP program into one of the best in the U.S., receiving numerous awards for its successes. James is currently serving as State Coordinator for NYSP.

The Centerville, Alabama, native is a 1966 graduate of Miles College. He received his Master’s Degree in Administration from the University of Montevallo in 1977.  James has taught and coached at both the elementary and high school levels in Alabama and Georgia.   He was administrative assistant at Pell City High School for 25 years. He also served as principal of Pell City High School for two years from 1996-1998.  In April 1998, he was appointed as the first Personnel Director of the Pell City School System.  He retired in June of 1998 to become the full-time Athletic Director at Miles College.

Augustus James is married to Renee; they have three daughters and two sons: Cheryl, Vanessa, Adriane, Erica and Quinton.  He also has three grandchildren: Devin, Kayla and Tamaya.
