FAIRFIELD, AL – Senior forward Cyntauria Jones (Ellenwood, GA) had a double-double to lead the Lady Bears to victory over Kentucky State University 68-59 Monday night at Knox-Windham Gym.
Miles (15-11; 12-9) went to halftime down 38-27, on the back of 40% shooting from the field and 60% on the line. Kentucky State (15-10; 15-6) hit 41.2% of its shots and 100% from the foul line. Miles led by as much as five in the first half, but fell behind by 11 points.
For the game, Miles shot 34.5 percent (19-of-55) from the floor and 80 percent (28-of-35) from the free throw line. Kentucky State hit 20-of-64 (31.3%) shots from the field and 14-of-18 (77.8%) from the line. The Lady Thorobrettes out rebounded the Lady Bears 44-41. In the paint, Kentucky State out scored Miles 26-20, but Miles out scored Kentucky State 24-14 off turnovers. The Lady Bears went on a 16-2 run in the first eight minutes of the second half to take its first lead at 43-40 with 14:12 remaining. Kentucky State Shana McCombs hit a 3-pointer for the tie at 43-43 with 12:14 to go, but that was as close as it would get. Sophomore forward Jessica Franklin (Forest Park, GA) took over from there scoring the next 6-of-9 points.
Jones led Miles with a game-high 20 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 steals, while hitting 6-of-18 shots and 8-of-10 free throws. Franklin scored 12 points and senior guard Cyntonia Jones (Ellenwood, GA) added 11 more. Junior point guard Ashley Orphey (Soperton, GA) dished out a game-high 7 assist, grabbed 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Junior center Brandy Gillespie (Tarrytown, GA) added 6 points and blocked 7 shots and sophomore forward Alicia Ware hit 6 points and sophomore center Sammeika Thomas had 7 boards and 2 blocks.
Stephanie Harper led Kentucky State with 16 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
The Lady Bears will host the Lady Tigers of Claflin University in its final game of the season on Wednesday, February 24 at Knox-Windham Gym. The game is scheduled for 5:30.
