Birmingham, AL – The Miles College Golden Bears picked-up a huge victory over no. 12 ranked Tuskegee University in a come from behind 23-16 win on Sunday, September 6 at Legion Field (Birmingham, AL) in the 3rd Annual Labor Day Golden Classic. Both team entered today’s game after coming off wins in their opening week. Miles defeated Lane College their opener at home in Fairfield and Tuskegee won over Benedict College in Columbia, SC.

The Golden Bears improves to 2-0 overall; 2-0 in the SIAC, while Tuskegee drops to 1-1; 1-1 in conference play. Miles, with the win broke Tuskegee’s 17 game conference win streak.

Miles had to come from a 16-0 deficit to win, as junior quarterback Carlton Hill threw a 60 yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jeremy Cody with 5:45 remaining in the game for the go ahead score. “From a team stand point our guys now know how to play under pressure and continue playing for 60 minutes.” Said head coach Bill Joe.

Tuskegee scored first on a safety, then a 41 yard pass to Antoine Mitchell from Jeremy Williams and Mitchell’s 57 yard catch from Wayne Williams to put the Golden Tigers up 16-0. Junior quarterback Carlton Hill countered with a 26 yard run just before halftime and a two point conversation to Jonorzell Green to cut the score in half (16-8).

Miles scored again in the 4th quarter, as it would be all the Golden Bears would need. Sophomore cornerbacks Darryl Perry pick-off a 60 yard pass from Jeremy Williams and returned it for a 16-16 tie. Hill hit Jeremy Cody with a 60 yard scoring pass with 5:45 left, put Miles ahead 23-16.

Hill threw for 105 yards on 6-of-18 attempts, one touchdown and rushed for another while gaining 74 yards on the ground. Tuskegee’s Jeremy Williams completed 7-of-25 passes for 123 yards. Miles sophomore and senior running backs Lucius Wade and Karell Law combined for 94 more yards on the ground.

The Golden Bears gained 274 yards of total offense to Tuskegee 318 and 169 yards in rushing to 97 on the ground for the Golden Tigers.

Miles next game will be in Columbia, SC as they take on the Tigers of Benedict College with a 6 p.m. kickoff. Tuskegee will host the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University at 1 p.m.
