QB Carlton Hill goes back to pass against Lane

– Miles College Golden Bears won their season opener over the Dragons of Lane College 35-18, Saturday at Albert J. Sloan-Alumni Stadium. This was both teams season opener and with the win the Golden Bears avenged the loss to Lane College of 52-2 in last year’s game in Jackson, TN.

Miles improves its record to 1-0; 1-0 in the SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), while Lane dropped to 0-1; 0-1 in the conference play.

The Golden Bears gained 361 yards of total offense, with 181 rushing yards, 180 in passing, as Lane put up 291 yards in total offense.

Miles, junior quarterback Carlton Hill scored five touchdowns during the game, three on the ground and two by way of air. Hill rushed for scores from the 31, 38 and 5 yard line in the second, third and fourth quarter. Carlton threw for two more touchdowns as he hit sophomore wide receiver Michael Jean-Louis for 55 yards and junior wide receiver Jonorzell Green for another 28 yards.

Hill accounted for 300 yards of Miles offense, as he rushed for 120 yards on 20 attempts and passed for 180 yards, while going 11-26-1.

Senior running back Walter Debbs, Jr. rushed for 42 yards on five attempts and sophomore wide receiver Michael Jean-Louis had 4 catches for 82 yards, one touchdown. Junior wide receiver Jonorzell Green had one catch for 28 yards and a touchdown, while senior wide-out Jeremy Cody pulled down three passes for 43 yards.

Miles defense showed up as well as red shirt freshman linebacker Reginald Virges and sophomore defensive back Ernie Tabuteau had 12 tackles apiece. Virges had two tackle- for-losses and forced two fumbles, while Tabuteau forced one fumble and picked off a pass and returned it for 24 yards. Sophomore defensive back Darryl Perry and linebacker Corey Robinson chipped in with 9 and 7 tackles each. Robinson had one tackle-for-loss and an 11 yard interception.

Lane had 291 yards in total offense on the night, while rushing for 198 yards and throwing for only 93 yards.

The Golden Bears will host the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University on Sunday, September 6 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama in the 3rd Annual Labor Day Golden Classis game at 6 p.m. Lane will be off next week
