Birmingham, AL – The Miles College Golden Bears baseball team (3-1) defeated Talladega College (0-2) in a double-hitter Sunday, 6-5 and 5-4 at Rickwood Field.

The Golden Bears inked out 9 hits to Talladega College 10 hits in game one. Miles scored two runs in the second off singles from Derek McElroy and Kelven Middlebrook. Nick Stone walked and Patrick Melvin scored McElroy and Middlebrook on a single. Talladega College scored 3 runs in the 3rd and 1 run in the 5th and 6, while Miles would not score again until the 7th. Miles scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th as the score was (2-5). Melvin singled and advanced to second on a balk, Sergio Galloway hit a two run homer to score Melvin to close the gap to (4-5). Patrick Alonso singled, Cory Wilkins walked, Joshua Moore walked and Alonso scored on a balk from third base for the tie (5-5). Wilkins later scored the winning run off a wild pitch.
Patrick Melvin was 2-for-3 at the plate, scored 1 run and 2 RBI’s, Patrick Alonso 2-for-4, 1 run, Kelven Middlebrook 2-for-3, 1 run and Sergio Galloway went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI’s for the Golden Bears.

Cody Newberry (2-0) picked-up the win in relief of Jeffery Jones after he went 4.2 inns as the starter. Newberry gave up 3 hits, 1 run and 3 strike outs, while Jones gave up 7 hit and 3 earned runs.

#25- Jose (0-1) got the loss for Talladega, while striking out 12 batters in 6 inns and giving up 8 hit and 4 earned runs.

Second Game: Talladega scored 2 runs in the 3rd, 1 run in the 5th and 6 inns and Miles scored 1 run in the 3rd, 3 runs in the 5th and 1 in the 6 inn. The Golden Bears finished with 9 hit and committed 3 errors to Talladega’s 8 hits and 1 error.

In the 5th , Miles tied the game on Jeffery Jones and Kelven Middlebrook single’s. Patrick Melvin ground out to short scored Jones from third base to make it (2-4). Sergio Galloway hit a two run homer over the left field wall to tie the game at (4-4). In the 7th , Melvin singled and later advanced to second on a balk and Galloway singled to left center to score Melvin with the winning run.

Sergio Galloway went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI’ s and scored, Patrick Melvin 2-for 4, 2 RBI’s and Kelven Middlebrook went 2-for-3 and scored 2 runs.

Alex Elrod entered the game in the 7th for the win in relief of starting pitcher Derek McElroy who went 6.1 inns and gave up 8 hit, 4 runs, and 1 earned run.

The Golden Bears next game is Wednesday, February 11 at (Rickwood Field) in Birmingham, AL with the University of Alabama-Huntsville at 1:00.
