Fairfield, AL – In the final basketball game in 2008, the Miles College Golden Bears (3-5; 3-2) knocked off the number one team in the SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) Panthers of Claflin University (9-1; 9-1) 66-58 tonight at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
The Golden Bears led at the half 38-31, while hitting 48.4 percent of their shots in field goals, 60 percent in threes and 38.5 percent from the free throw line. Claflin hit 45.8 percent of its shots and 44.4 percent in free throws. For the game, Miles would hit 25-of-51 shots from the field for 49 percent, 12-of-26 for 46.2 percent from the foul line and 4-of-11 for 36.4 percent from the 3-point line. The Panthers shot 38.2 percent on 21-of-55 shots from the field and 50 percent from the free throw line on 10-of-20 shots.
Miles out rebounded Claflin 42-31, but had one more turn over than the Panthers 20-19. The Panthers would pickup their largest lead of 7 points with 7:39 left in the first half, while Miles biggest lead of 11 points came in the second half with 13:40 left.
Senior guard Flawaan Flaggs scored a game-high 23 points, while going 3-of-4 from the foul line and grabbing 4 rebounds to lead the Golden Bears to victory. Senior guard Leon McKinney added 18 points and pulled down 9 boards and dished out 3 assist. Senior guard Reggie Griffin dished out a game-high 7 assist, scored 7 points and had 5 rebounds. Junior center Chijoke Maduabunchi grabbed 9 rebound and Eddie Ishman scored another 6 points and 4 rebounds.
Eric Salley led the Panthers with 14 points, while Karl Ray and David Cobb would have 9 rebounds each.
The Golden Bears will host the Lions of Paine College at Knox-Windham Gymnasium in Fairfield on Thursday, January 1, 2009 at 3:00.
