FAIRFIELD, AL - Administrators at Miles College
have announced several internal adjustments in order to strengthen
the College’s compliance with NCAA guidelines for student athletes as it begins
the 2008-09 football season. The measures come as the college withheld nearly 40 players from Sunday’s contest between Miles and Stillman College. Prior to Sunday’s Labor Day Classic at Legion Field, the college made the decision that rather than risk student athlete eligibility, existing compliance procedures at the institution needed to be refined. The administration has restructured the office of compliance with personnel changes that include a new director of compliance and additional staff. Additionally, the college has retained The Compliance Group, a licensed certification firm, to assist in the recertification process of all student athletes. The goal is to better expedite the process of clearing students for athletic participation. The changes have been made to reassert the administration’s commitment to taking compliance seriously. After self-reporting minor violations to the NCAA in 2006, Miles has been working closely with the NCAA clearinghouse to develop a systematic approach to meeting athletic compliance. The college came to the conclusion that leading to Sunday’s game, compliance goals had not been met to the satisfaction of the institution. Miles believes its structural adjustments will help solidify its commitment to Miles student athletes, alumni, and the business community.
