FAIRFIELD, AL – Junior guard Flawaan Flaggs hit a career high 43 points to lead three Golden Bears in double figures as Miles defeated the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians 95-94 Thursday night at Knox-Windham Gym.

The Golden Bears move-up to 8-6 overall and 6-4 in the SIAC, while LeMoyne-Owen drops to 6-8 overall and 6-3 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Miles went into halftime down by 9 (50-41), while hitting 41.2 percent from the field, 53.3 percent from the foul line and 33.3 percent in three’s. The Magicians shot 50 percent from the floor and 87.5 percent in free throws and 42.9 percent in three’s. Flaggs hit 19 of his 43 points in the first half and Rasul Buulu scored 22 of his 39 for LeMoyne-Owen.

The Golden Bears shot 43.7 percent from the floor for the game while hitting 31-of-71 shots and hit 23-of-40 free throws for 57.5 percent. Miles would hit 10-of 26 shots from three point land for 38.5 percent. The Magicians hit 36-of-72 shots from the field and 81 percent from the foul line as they made 17-of-21 shots. LeMoyne-Owen had 51 rebounds to Miles 37, while LeMoyne-Owen turned the ball over 21 times to Miles 13.

LeMoyne-Owen led by 11 with 7:02 left, but Miles went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 79-79 on a steal and lay-up by Leon McKinney with 4:30 left. With 4:23 left, McKinney had another steal and lay-up that put Miles ahead 81-79. This was the Golden Bears first time leading in the game. Flaggs two free throws put Miles up 95-90 with 54 second left, but LeMoyne-Owen was not finished as Buulu made two free throws and Rashed Weathers made a lay-up with 32 seconds left to draw within one point (95-94). The Magicians had two shots at the basket with seconds left for the win, but could not connect.

Leon McKinney stepped up for 28 points, 6 rebounds and hit 4-of-7 free throws and Reggie Griffin added 10 points, three assist and five points from the free throw line. Gaelon Hayden added another 6 points and five rebounds and a block shot, while Jeremy Cody and Justin Harris had 3 points each. Cody had a team-high 7 rebounds and a block shot on the night.

Buulu scored big for the Magicians with 39 points, while hitting 13-of-22 shots and making 12-of 14 free throws and 10 rebounds. Deon Lawson added 10 points.

The Golden Bears will travel to Tuskegee, AL on Saturday, January 19 to play The Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University at 7:30.
