FAIRFIELD, AL – Junior guard Flawaan Flaggs scored a season high 32 points and junior guard Leon McKinney also had a season high 30 points as the Miles College Golden Bears men’s basketball team win 85-76 over the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers Saturday night at Knox-Windham Gym. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 6-6 on the season and 4-4 in conference play. Morehouse College dropped to 7-3; 4-2 in the SIAC.

Before tip-off Miles senior center DeMario Williams was hit with a technical foul for dunking the ball during warm-up. Morehouse Travis Floyd drained two free throw shots to put the Maroon Tigers up by two points.

Miles led by as many as 11 in the opening 20 minutes of play, while the Maroon Tigers closed the half on a 19-7 run, but the Golden Bears would take a 3-point lead into the locker room. Miles led 46-43 at the break on the back of 31.9 percent shooting and hitting 10-of-12 free throws for 83.3 percent. Morehouse hit 15-of-30 shots for 50.0 percent, while hitting 55.6 percent of their threes and 66.7 percent from the foul line.

After leading by double digits most of the second half, the Golden Bears held off a late Morehouse rally that saw the Maroon Tigers tie the game at 70-70 with 5:26 remaining. Miles scored 12 straight points to secure the win, including two free throws by Flaggs and one by McKinney to give the Golden Bears a 85-76 lead with five seconds remaining. The Golden Bears shot just 36.4 percent from the floor, but 71.4 percent from the line and the Maroon Tigers shot 46.8 percent from the field and 50.0 percent in free throws.

Flaggs scored 22 of his 32 points in the first half, as he finished 12-for-12 from the line and hit two 3-pointers, while going 9-of-20 from the field and a game-high 5 steals. McKinney hit 13 points as well in the first half, making five threes and six rebounds for the game. Sophomore forward Jeremy Cody grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds and 9 points and Larry Swain added 6 points. Gaylon Hayden added five points and six rebounds and Reggie Griffin dished out a game-high 9 assist and 4 steals.

Morehouse was led by Travis Floyd and Jason Reese with 18 points each and Kenney Boyd game-high 14 rebounds and 16 points.
The Golden Bears will host the Panthers of Clark Atlanta University on Monday, January 14 at Knox-Windham Gym on the campus of Miles College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
